Metropole makes its mark in Townsville

Palmer Street will cement itself as the social hub of Townsville with the exciting completion and imminent opening of the Metropole Hotel and Tower, project managed and delivered by Queensland construction company RCQ for the Pointon Group.

RCQ Director and CEO Steve Cole said the successful delivery of Metropole was a fitting end to what has been a highly rewarding year for RCQ’s North Queensland team.

“We are excited to not only have had the opportunity to expand RCQ’s portfolio in this thriving regional centre, but to work with a company whose roots are also firmly planted in Queensland,” Mr Cole said.

Pointon Group Managing Director Brett Pointon said choosing RCQ to build Metropole Hotel and Tower was an easy decision based on the company’s successful track record in delivering major residential and commercial developments throughout Queensland.

“With a significant project such as Metropole, it was important to have an exceptional working relationship with our chosen builder and RCQ have certainly bought a level of professionalism to the project delivery,” Mr Pointon said.

“We are very excited to introduce Metropole to Townsville, with both the pub and hotel accommodation expected to be open for business in the New Year.”

Metropole Tower called Hotel M consists of an 11 storey accommodation tower adjacent to the pub refurbishment and includes 52 dual key (104 single), 4.5 star hotel accommodation units, onsite car parking, gym facilities and swimming pool. Finishes are state-of-the-art and include fully functional kitchens, washing and drying facilities, large flat screen televisions and individual balconies for each room.

RCQ North Queensland Manager Chris Ahern said in addition to the accommodation tower, the refurbishment of the iconic Metropole pub was a rewarding challenge for the construction team.

“Full of local history, the Metropole is a significant hotel for Townsville and we are honoured to contribute to what will no doubt be a thriving new accommodation facility and hospitality hub for the city,” Mr Ahern said.

“Undergoing a total structural refurbishment internally, locals will be pleased to know the pub, built in 1886, has retained its heritage features and renowned character including the iconic bull nose verandah and balcony above with existing decorative cast iron balustrades.”

New and improved features include a gaming room, sports bar, cocktail bar, tapas dining area, alfresco dining downstairs and an upstairs functions room with the capacity for 200 people.

The completion of Metropole follows RCQ’s recent award win in the 2008 Queensland Master Builders Housing & Construction Awards for their refurbishment work on the Australian Hotel.

Hotel M will be managed by Oaks Hotels & Resorts, Australia’s fastest growing apartment management group that currently manages 35 hotels and resorts across Australia and New Zealand.
